industry by studying at the collegiate level. Colleges
across the country offer music departments, bursting
with courses in theory and performance, plus the
opportunity to participate ensembles, put on
performances, review centuries of archived music
recordings and participate in student chapters of
national musical organizations.
Towson
University
Students at Towson University has a number of
opportunities to earn music degrees. Bachelor candidates
can major in composition, voice, music theory, music
education, or jazz and commercial music; students
wishing to become teachers can enroll in the Master of
Music degree with thesis Towson in composition. The
school provides resources such as an ear training
computer lab, former concert CDs, recitals throughout
the year, practice rooms and specialty music course
guide. While on campus, students can participate in

The University of Chicago offers both an
undergraduate and graduate program in music through its
Department of Music. Courses include introduction to
composition, modern opera, introduction to computer
music, ethnomusicology, jazz, Asian music, introduction
to social and cultural studies of music and introduction
to musical analysis and criticism. Students have the
opportunity to graduate with an honors designation by
writing a research paper or create a composition, which
is supervised by a faculty member. Resources are
available through the school's music collection, home to
32000/video-audio recordings and 110,000 books, Chicago
Jazz Archive and Newberry Library, plus on-the-spot
practice rooms and a music production Studio. Students
also have the opportunity to audition for the
University's performance Program that offers 14
ensembles including Orchestra, choir, Chamber music,
world music and put on 100 performances per season.
Admission to the undergraduate music program requires
a high school diploma shows of course work in a foreign
language, four years of English, three to four years of
math and three to four years of science. SAT or ACT
scores are also required; the average admission scores
of the class of 2012 was between 1310 and 1540 or 28 and
33, respectively. The school also believes, letters of
reference, a personal essay and additional recreational

Stanford University: a major in music or a major in
music, science and technology. Concentrations in the
degree is available in the history, conducting, theory,
performance and composition. Student matriculation in
