Training
Almost all adults in the Micronesia
Federation can read and write. Schooling is compulsory
for children between the ages of 6 and 14, but many
students leave school sooner than that.
The school system follows the American model with an
eight-year elementary school and four years in high
school. The training is free of charge but suffers from
a lack of teaching materials and educated teachers.

There is a general college with, among other things,
teacher training on the island of Pohnpei and a maritime
and fishing academy on the island of Yap. Many of the
residents who acquire higher education choose to do so
in the United States. It is common among highly educated
to live and work abroad, primarily in the United States.
